Congratulations to Tommy Beauty PRO Fashion/Beauty/Wedding Blog! This is a milestone for my blog as it’s reaching the 100th blog entry, YAY! I promise this is going to a very informational make-up blog with tons of make-up tips!
On May 26, 2012, I had a pleasure to be the make-up artist for Laurie Belle of Leftcoast TV “Get Cooking with the Stars” show host/producer to do her red carpet make-up for the annual 2012 Leo Awards – The Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia (Canada) red carpet event.
Large scale red carpet events don’t happen very often here in Vancouver, BC. Canada, but Leo Awards is one of them. Some of the most famous red carpet events that people are familiar with are: the Oscars Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, Cannes Film Festival, Grammy Awards…etc. Red carpet is where of the publicity and excitement takes place with press discussing fashion – what designers are being worn by which celebrities and photographers taking pictures. Red carpets are often coupled with media boards which contain logos or event sponsors for photography purposes.
I met with Laurie Belle at TONI&GUY Hair Studio in downtown Vancouver (Alberni Location). As hair stylist CoCo & RIO were working her hair, I started prepping for Laurie’s face for her red carpet beauty make-up.
I asked to see Laurie’s dress, and got an idea of what she will look like because make-up & hair must compliment what she wears. Red carpet make-up requires knowledge of fashion, trend and beauty as it must reflects the personality & character of the celebrity. For today’s red carpet event, the hair is being dressed in the Hollywood Veronica Lake’s waved hair, and the make-up is going to compliment the hair and dress without being too overpowering – neither the hair or the make-up should be the centre of attention unless you are Lady GaGa, right?
The whole wardrobe was completed at Blushing Boutique of Shelley Klassen dresses & jewelry and Mona Sultan S/S 2012 scarf. The team of event photographers Dan Poh & Sandra Liang, cameraman Chris Wright, journalist Misty Chalmers and I all hopped onto the limo to attend the Leo Award’s event at Fairmount Hotel Vancouver! It was a fun day!

MAKE-UP ARTISTRY
For those of you who are interested in the make-up and pro artist tricks that I used on Laurie, here is the list of the key M·A·C Cosmetics (the official cosmetics sponsor of the event) products that I used on Laurie for her Red Carpet Beauty make-up:
FACE:
- I mixed 2-3 different shades of Full Coverage Foundation and applied skillfully on the face to get that camera-ready-canvas, and set it with Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder/Pressed with #167 Face Blender Brush. The combination gives a smooth effect while taking away any imperfections on the skin, and the fibre of the brush (high quality selected goat hair) is really soft & gentle so it feels like a mini massage on the skin.
Tommy’s PRO Make-up Artist Tips 1
Mix your foundation with Strobe Cream together to sheer the texture of the foundation. Apply the mixed foundation with #130 Short Duo Fibre Brush in a circular buffing motion to achieve a good, polished skin while adding that subtle, healthy, glowing effect!
- The face was hilighted & contoured in M·A·C PRO’s Sculpt & Shape colours with #168 Large Angled Contour Brush.
EYES:
- I did a structured brow on Laurie by drawing and filling in with Lingering Eye Brow Pencil, it is the trend for Spring/Summer 2012 to have that fuller & more structured eye brows. Lingering Eye Brows is retractable and does not require sharpening! The brows were brushed with Clear Brow Set for a groomed finish.
- To ensure the eye make-up stays on for a long time, I used Bare Canvas Eye Paints as a base all over the eye area, and top it with Naked Lunch & Vanilla eye shadows as hilight colours. The eyelids were filled with Shroom eye shadow, and the outter corner of the eyes were coloured in Bronze & Smut eye shadows with #226 Small Tapered Blending Brush.
- The black eye liners were winged up in M·A·C PRO’s Black Black Chromaline to give that Hollywood glamour appeal. It is a waterproof gel/cream eye liner which is ideal to use for face or eye make-up. It gives a smooth line and pretty opaque in colour payoff ; I use this as an alternative product to my regular Blacktrack Fluidline. Teddy Eye Kohl was smudged and blended at the bottom of the eyes with #219 Pencil Brush, and the waterline was filled in Fascinating Eye Kohl for an extra popping effect.
Tommy’s Pro Make-up Artist Tips 2:
When doing a glamour eye make-up, always ensure the liner from the top & bottom meet together at the outer corer of the eye, extend a bit further than the actual eye, and wing up. It gives an instant eye lift look! Make sure the winged up angle is even at both sides!
Tommy’s PRO Make-up Artist Tips 3:
You can always use a white or ivory coloured pencil and fill in the waterline to enlarge the appearance of the eyes while making them pop. The effect is even stronger by lining the eyes with a dark colour outside of the waterline.
- The mascara I used on Laurie is actually a new launched product from M·A·C called Endless Black Extended Play Lash mascara. This fabulous mascara comes with a slim-line brush that is great for applying the bottom lashes, or shorter lashes. I used it on Laurie, and it instantly gives a glossy black colour on the lashes. It really
separates the lashes & curls the lashes lightly with its feathery lightweight. It’s actually smudge-proof too! This mascara is now one of my favorite mascaras that I am keeping in my make-up tool belt! The mascara colour is actually black, it’s just the tube packaging is in blue.
Tommy’s PRO Make-up Artist Tips 4:
For a much précised make-up application, always paint the edge band of the false lashes in the eye liner you are applying. Sometimes, a dark black coloured eye lash glue really does the trick and saves you time!
Tommy’s PRO Make-up Artist Tips 5:
If you make a little boo boo with a mascara, and you wanted to clean it up without ruining the rest of the make-up, try to use MAC Matte Texture! Just wait for the mascara to dry first, and then take a pointed Q-tip with a tiny amount of Matte Texture, it will erase it right away. Matte Texture is actually a silicon-based mattifying product to use on the face area (such as T-zone) to take away shine and oil.
CHEEKS:
- Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish was swiped on the upper cheekbone up to above the brows to highlight. It was also applied with #219 Pencil Brush just above her lips in cupid’s bow to make her lips appear fuller and pouty.
- The pink on the cheeks were mixed in Fleur Power Powder Blush & Two Virtues Mineralize Blush colours.
LIPS:
- The chosen colour was Pink Nouveau lipstick to really compliment her dress colour, and Clear Lipglass was also used at the centre of her lips for a shine effect for camera.
Overall, I would describe this red carpet make-up look as a glamour make-up look with a trend appeal. You definitely want to keep the face in a matte finish so the face doesn’t look oily on camera – although the glowing effect is great on the highlighted area of the face. Most importantly, you want to ensure the make-up & hair looks great from all angles because the celebrity’s picture can be taken by any photographers at any angles.

Client Testimonial from Laurie Belle:
I was thrilled when I learned that celebrity makeup artist Tommy Chiang (Hilary Duff, Miss Universe pageant) was going to be my makeup artist for the red carpet at the LEO Awards Gala, Saturday, May 26th, 2012. The Team of Coco and Rio from Toni & Guy on Alberni Street alongside Tommy Chiang Makeup ensured that I would reach that glam, sultry, old Hollywood-style we were after.
Tommy was professional, fun, and had great precision with the many lip-popping hues and variety of colors he used to enhance my eyes and match my dress from Blushing Boutique. Tommy understood that my style is more natural than heavy makeup and still combined the right colors from MAC Cosmetics to fit red carpet style.
The care that Tommy exuded was evident when he wouldn’t allow me to leave for the Leo Awards Gala without one last dash back to Blushing Boutique to pick up some perfect jewels. Tommy said that “ the red carpet is THE time to really pull out all those accessories.”
Dan Poh of Dan Poh Photography completed the team, with his always magnificent photos. We reached that Hollywood Era that we were after.
Tommy and Dan along with the rest of my team from Leftcoast TV (writer Misty Chalmers and cameraman Chris Wright) and I, all hopped in the limo and headed out for an unforgettable evening at the Leo Awards Gala held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.
Thanks Tommy Chiang. You were absolutely amazing!
