About the Designer:

LEE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Alexander McQueen was born in London on March 17th, 1969, the youngest of six children. He left school at the age of 16 and was offered an apprenticeship at the traditional Savile Row tailors Anderson and Shephard and then at neighbouring Gieves & Hawkes, both masters in the technical construction of clothing.
From there he moved to the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans where he mastered 6 methods of pattern cutting from the melodramatic 16th Century to the razor sharp tailoring which has become a McQueen signature. Aged 20 he was employed by the designer Koji Tatsuno, who also had his roots in British tailoring. A year later McQueen travelled to Milan where he was employed as Romeo Gigli’s design assistant. On his return to London, he completed a Masters degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin’s. He showed his MA collection in 1992, which was famously bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow.
Alexander McQueen shows are known for their emotional power and raw energy, as well as the romantic but determinedly contemporary nature of the collections. Integral to the McQueen culture is the juxtaposition between contrasting elements: fragility and strength, tradition and modernity, fluidity and severity. An openly emotional and even passionate viewpoint is realised with a profound respect and influence for the arts and crafts tradition. Alexander’s collections combine an in-depth working knowledge of bespoke British tailoring, the fine workmanship of the French Haute Couture atelier and the impeccable finish of Italian manufacturing.

In less than 10 years McQueen became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world. In October 1996 he was appointed Chief Designer at the French Haute Couture House Givenchy where he worked until March of 2001.

In December 2000, 51% of Alexander McQueen was acquired by the Gucci Group, where he remained Creative Director. Collections include women’s ready-to-wear, men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, eyewear and fragrance (Kingdom 2003 and MyQueen 2005). Expansion followed and included the opening of flagship stores in New York, London, Milan, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

The following awards have recognized Alexander McQueen’s achievement in fashion: British Designer of the year 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003, International Designer of the Year by The Council of Fashion Designer’s of America (CFDA) in 2003, A Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire (CBE) by her Majesty the Queen in 2003, GQ Menswear Designer of the Year in 2007.

2015 Met Gala

6 May
Re-post Article from VOGUE TAIWAN  |  文字:Sun  VOGUE.TW
·
(China: Through the Looking Glass)」,現在就來看看眾女星們如何演繹令人眼睛一亮的中國風吧!
 ·

Bee Shaffer

Anne Hathaway

Lady Gaga

Alexander Wang Unveils H&M Ad Campaign

“I am honored to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle,” Alexander Wang said.

This is the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M, and the Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for both men and women.

Typical for his irreverent approach, Alexander Wang will propose a new take on the lifestyle product offering that goes beyond fashion.

The New York based fashion designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualizing the urban uniform, since it was launched on the runway in 2007.  Alexander Wang’s core sensibility is a reflection on contrasts, blending seamlessly between the refined and the imperfect.  His collections have an unprecious outlook on fashion, and always reflect a sense of ease.

“Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,” said Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative advisor.

November 6, please come soon.

Exhibition in Shanghai

4 Nov
Esprit Dior in Shanghai

Esprit Dior in MoCA Shanghai |

·

With a cascade of 3,000 ceramic Dior perfume bottles suspended from the ceiling forming a dramatic installation by artist Liu Jianhua, it’s clear Dior isn’t content with merely playing the ‘heritage’ card in China.

Last night the Esprit Dior exhibition opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai’s historic People’s Park. Merely delving into the archives would have patronised China’s new savvy consumers, so instead Dior presented nine themes, grouping collections together from 1947 to the present day, and introduced eight of China’s emerging artists to display an homage to the maestro of Avenue Montaigne.

The artists involved feel a personal connection with what Dior represents. Liu Jianhua said ‘I was very impressed with the history, and story and entrepreneurship of Christian Dior.’ Liu Tianmiao paid tribute to the atelier’s technicians and ‘grafted tools and skeletons to create new values’ while bad boy Zhang Huan’s portrait used incense ash from Buddhist temples ‘to symbolise Dior’s collective soul’.

Christian Dior’s first art gallery showed Dali, Giacometti, Miró and Klee, and – like Raf Simons – he had a background in architecture, which gave him a broadness of vision, to which this show is a testament. It is also intriguing to distinguish the details of each individual designer’s interpretation of Dior’s sculpted silhouettes, season by season, designer by designer. Such is the iconography of Dior. The exhibition presents a riveting portrayal of one man’s unique vision, seen through many talented and experimental eyes.

Judging by the extensive client list at the Shanghai opening, Dior has the definitive mainland A-lister address book and the incorporation of Chinese artists added edge to the event. Photographer Patrick Demarchelier enthused ‘I love the mixture of clothes, pictures and art. As a young photographer, Dior was actually one of my first clients.’

With more than a hundred Dior dresses on display, contrasting the ‘New Look’ of 1947 to the present day red carpet designs for brand ambassador starlets, no detail has been spared. Milliner Stephen Jones was thrilled to spend four days personally positioning each hat on the mannequins. ‘We have all the wooden blocks, and some from 1947 where it all started. It’s a dream come true. To be in Dior, to be in that house and to work with the amazing technicians in the atelier.’

Adds curator Florence Muller: ‘This exhibition is a mix of art and fashion, but also of past and present, a theme many of the Chinese artists can relate to.’

ESPRIT DIOR

  • 13TH SEPTEMBER – 20TH NOVEMBER 2013
  • MOCA – SHANGHAI (CHINA)
  • ADDRESS: MoCA – People’s Park, 231 Nanjing West Road, Shanghai 200003 China

Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai works to promote artistic and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. I would especially like to thank the House of Dior for its contribution to this exhibition. The number 8 has great importance in Chinese culture, in which it is considered a lucky number, and also seems to have particular significance for Christian Dior, whose Corolla and Eight silhouettes redefined and reinvented the history of fashion more than half a century ago.

The winner of the 2013 H&M Design Award is Minju Kim, a 26-year-old student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Minju won the chance to present her collection with her own show at the Mercedes-Benz Stockholm Fashion Week, as well as a prize of €50,000. Minju also won the opportunity to develop pieces from her collection to be sold in selected H&M stores this autumn. Minju was chosen by a grand jury which included fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, editor-at-large Tim Blanks, stylist Leith Clark, photographer Sølve Sundsbø, blogger and photographer Hanneli Mustaparta, fashion journalist Kristopher Arden Houser, H&M’s Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch, and H&M’s Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson.

“I still can’t believe it that I have won the H&M Design Award 2013. It’s so amazing to be able to show at Mercedes-Benz Stockholm Fashion Week, and to experience what it’s like to have a show all to yourself. It’s such an amazing opportunity, and such a big surprise,” says Minju Kim, winner of the H&M Design Award 2013.

“I am so happy that Minju Kim has won the H&M Design Award for 2013. Her collection was amazing, full of creativity, happiness and the joy of exploring different shapes and details. Minju kept it all together with a strong sense of design and craftsmanship,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Head of Design.

“Minju had everything. From the first little detail to the last elaborate outfit, it was incredibly coherent, and with an attitude to life that was so joyous. I just felt good looking at her clothes. You can see how people would really be seduced by Minju’s designs,” says Tim Blanks, Editor-at-large, Style.com.

Minju is a designer from South Korea who is now in her final masters year studying fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She won the H&M Design Award 2013 with her BA collection titled “Dear My Friend”, inspired by Japanese Manga cartoonist Junji Ito. The inspiration may be fantastical, but the work that went into the collection was incredibly serious. The H&M Design Award judges were impressed by Minju’s determination to make each piece as perfect as she could. When Minju graduates next year, she plans to gain experience through internships at established brands, before setting up a label of her own.

The winner of this year’s H&M Design Award People’s Prize was announced today as Alba Prat, who has studied at Universität der Künste, Berlin. The prize has been decided by visitors to the H&M Design Award website, who have been voting since January 16 for their favourite collection. Alba Prat receives a month’s internship at Jonathan Saunders in London, giving her the chance to gain invaluable experience with one of fashion’s hottest designers.

Now in its second year, the H&M Design Award aims to encourage and support young fashion talent at the very beginning of their careers. Graduates from nineteen design schools in eight countries, including this year Italy and France, competed first to be local winners, before showing their work to the grand prize jury. Today’s winning show by Minju was streamed live at designaward2013.hm.com, where footage of the entire award’s process can be seen, to inspire future generations of designers who will help move fashion forward.
