Makeup 101: Perfect Red Lip

17 Dec
Creating Perfect Red Lip

Creating Perfect Red Lip

·

Red Lip is the most classic look for the fall/winter seasons… it’s sexy, it’s sensual, it makes a statement, it never dates, and it’s what you want to look like for the holiday season!

Creating a perfect red lip may not be as easy as it seems. With any red lips (or any dark color lip colors), it tends to feather outside your lips easily, so you need to prep the lips well. Strong colour such as red needs to be crispy clean. Also, you really need to check for your red color lip liner to ensure symmetry as well (top to bottom & left to right)!

Here are some images and instructions on how to create that perfect red lip from Make Up For Ever artist tips!

Prior to Step 1, I would recommend to lightly exfoliate your lips with Vasline jelly & a soft fiber tooth brush to take off the dead skin on the lip surface. This will ensure a clean lip surface.

·

Creating Perfect Red Lip step 1

Creating Perfect Red Lip step 1

1. Start by applying a thin coat of Liquid Foundation with a Shading Brush to create a flawless canvas. You may also replace this step by using a Lip Primer that helps to create a smoother lip surface.

·

Creating Perfect Red Lip step 2

2. For long lasting lip color, powder your lips with some Loose Matte Powder using a Kabuki Brush.

·

Creating Perfect Red Lip step 3

3. Follow by applying a Lip Line Prefector to the coutour of your lips, this will prevent your lipstick from feathering.

·

4. Next, using a red lip liner (preferably a waterproof lip pencil) to draw your contour and blend the edges in towards the center of the lips using a Lip Brush. Make sure the lip line is symmetrical (top to bottom, left to right).

·

5. Now fill in your lips with a red lipstick  (preferably a matte texture lipstick) with the help of a clean Lip Brush starting from the corners.

·

6. Finish off by cleaning the outer edges with the an Angled Brush using a little bit of Concealer (and/or Powder) to create that very crispy clean edge. You can also add a touch of lip gloss just on the center of the lips for a high shine finish.

Makeup 101: SPF and Sun-Kissed Bronzing Skin

11 Dec
Bronzing Skin Make-up by Tommy | Phot by Yila D Imaging

Bronzing Skin Make-up by Tommy | Phot by Yila D Imaging

·

It is winter time here in Vancouver, BC. Canada now. The weather is starting to get pretty cold in temperature as it’s approaching to the Christmas holiday season. Typically around this time, a lot of people in Canada like to travel to warm destinations, and some of the most popular places are: Hawaii, Cancun, Cuba, Puerto Vallarta, Rivera Maya…etc.

Of course, we are not discussing about travel destinations nor summer holiday resorts in this blog post; in terms of skincare and cosmetics, most of us in North America like to look all bronzed-up when we travel to warm/beach destinations. You want to ensure you wear good sun care products to protect your skin to prevent damages such as sun burn or premature aging.

·

Kabuki-03

·

In this blog post, you will read about:

  1. The basics of sun care and SPF
  2. Sun-kissed make-up look with a bronzer
  3. How-To video by Mally Beauty: How To Apply Bronze Genius Self-Tanning Bronzing Powder
  4. How-To video by Estée Lauder: Bronzing “Lift” Signature Technique
  5. How-To video by online make-up artist Michelle Phan: Bronze Beauty

You will enjoy New York make-up artist Mally’s How To Apply Mally’s Bronze Genius Self-Tanning Bronzing Powder video because I find her to be quite a character (in a fun, amusing way). The way she talks is very entertaining, and you will find her video content to be  informative. You will love her bubbly personality!

The Bronzing “Lift”: Estée Lauder Signature Technique video will show you another way of applying the bronzer, and it gives a lifted appearance to the face. I have also tried this technique many times before and it’s quiet effective as it involves more techniques in shading & contouring . It’s all about having options when it comes to make-up, right?

Lastly, I added an extra YouTube video from online make-up artist Michelle Phan on the topic of Bronze Beauty using Lancôme cosmetic products. In this video, you will learn how to get the sun-kissed look without being in the sun… and that can also be translated as how to get yourself ready before heading to beach destination resort from head-to-toe!

Please enjoy this blog post!

What is SPF?

We use sunscreen to block ultraviolet light from damaging the skin. There are two categories of UV light: UVA and UVB—that we consider in terms of sunscreen. UVB causes sunburn (or potentially skin cancer), and UVA has more long-term damaging effects on the skin, like premature aging. SPF, or sun protection factor, numbers were introduced in 1962 to measure a sunscreen’s effect against UVB rays.

To figure out how long you can stay in the sun with a given SPF, use this equation:

Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF number = maximum sun exposure time

For example, if you burn after 10 minutes of sun exposure, an SPF of 15 will allow you to be in the sun for up to 150 minutes without burning. Please remember this equation is only a guideline.

In general, a higher SPF number means more sun-exposure time. Please note that a higher SPF in a sunscreen does offer higher protection against UVB rays; but once you get past SPF 30, protection doesn’t increase dramatically, and the higher number may give you a false sense of protection.

·

·

How Sunscreens Protect Your Health

There are many different brands of sunscreen available. They are classified according to their active ingredients, as some products contain chemical filters, some contain physical filters, and some contain both.

  • Chemical Filters absorb some of the UV radiation and convert it into heat. There are more chemical filters that absorb UVB rays than absorb UVA rays.
  • Physical Filters are small particles (usually zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that scatter and reflect both UVB and UVA rays. This is the type of sunscreen that gives a bit of “white” appearing colour on the skin, and its especially obvious when you take pictures with a flash.

Here are some helpful information for you to know about sun protection:

  1. Know Your Skin: If you are whiter than a sheet of paper, if someone you know has skin cancer, or if you are sensitive to the sun because of a medication or a medical condition, take extra measures. In general, fair skin burns more quickly than darker skin. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, wear a hat when you are out, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply that sunscreen often.
  2. Broaden your spectrum: The SPF number indicates protection only against UVB raysmany sunscreens, even those with a high SPF, allow UVA rays to be absorbed by the skin. UVA protection is usually indicated by a “broad-spectrum” label. Look for this to ensure the most well-rounded sun coverage.
  3. Here comes the sun: To be effective, sunscreen needs to be fully absorbed into the skin, so apply it 15 to 30 minutes before you even step into the sun.
  4. Reapply yourself: Whether you’re lying by the pool or mowing the lawn, you’ll probably be exposed to sweat or water, the natural enemies of sunscreen. To be safe, reapply after you swim or sweat. In general, sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours.
  5. Full exposure: No matter how high the SPF, sunscreen can protect only the skin it covers. The most commonly missed spots are the temples, ears, back of the neck and top of the feet. If you are sometimes guilty of losing your focus while applying your lotion, try one of the sunscreens that contains disappearing colorants, so you can identify un-lotioned areas before they burn to a crisp.

On a daily basis, I recommend everyone to wear sun protection of SPF 15 or more on the face. It can be a sunscreen itself, or sunscreen contained within your day cream/moisturizer, face primer or even your foundation.

For beach/vacation time,  when your skin exposes to the sun for a much longer time, there are some after-sun care products in the market that you can use to repair your skin from minor sun burns. Most of the after-sun care products contain aloe vera to help sooth your skin and let it cool down from the heat.

Sun-Kissed Bronzing Skin

Now that you know some of the basics of protecting your skin from sun, you also want to know a little about using a bronzer to add that sun-kissed beauty look on your face, right?

With a bronzing powder that’s at least 1-2 shades deeper than your natural skintone, you can create that illusion of sun-kissed look with a bronzer brush on the right placement of your face.

·

BRONZER TIP: To achieve a subtle yet golden vibedon’t apply the bronzer all over your face. This can make the color to appear flat. Use a large brush to dust bronzer lightly around your hairline, across the bridge of the nose, on the cheeks, over the chin, and along the jawlines. Be sure to blend well to diffuse the color and achieve a natural finish.

·

Bronzer-Sun Kissed Skin for Vacation

Bronzer-Sun Kissed Skin for Vacation

·

You want to ensure the bronzer is applied on your neck area as well so the color looks consistent from your face. In general, the rule of thumb abut the placement of a bronzer color is on the high planes (the more prominent area) of your facethink of the areas on the face where it naturally get more exposure to the sun light.

·

Sun Kissed Bronze on the Face

Sun Kissed Bronze on the Face

·

Some bronzer contains subtle glitter or shimmer in it, and those are great to use as cheek colors as the shimmer gives a luminated glow on the face. Most of the bronzer out there on the market is in a matter finish (meaning it has no shimmer, and it give a flat, no-shine finish on the skin). This type of bronzer could also be great to use as a contouring color for your make-up, to add a bit of shading on your face for a more 3-dimensional look, and it gives a more healthy look to the make-up look.

·

Jennifer Lopez: Sun-Kissed Glow Make-up

Sun-Kissed Glow Make-up on Jennifer Lopez

In general, I try to avoid using a bronzer that is too orangey in color. To me, that looks a bit too fake looking. Try to choose a bronzer color that best resembles your “tanned” skin color. In terms of beauty make-up, we are adding more color make-up to enhance your natural beauty, to add warmer tint to create a healthier appearance, but not to fake it too much to the point where people think it’s way too “fake n’ bake”.

Makeup 101: Eye Liner Tips & Tricks

6 Nov
Eye Liner 101

Eye Liner 101

·

Eye liners can be created with many different make-up products & tools. It can instantly alter your eye shapes, asides from accentuating your eyes (as seen in the EYE LINER 101 chart above)! It’s a must-know makeup technique you need to learn!

For more of a dramatic effect, most people like to use a liquid or gel/cake/cream formula eye liner to create that winged out Feline Flick look–it gives more of a sexy, glamorous  appeal. These products usually give a darker, stronger, and more opaque finish on the lines.

·

Backstage Graphic Eye Liner Looks

·

For more of a natural look, an eye pencil or an eye shadow application with a liner brush can do the trick. Why? With a liner brush application of a pencil or eye shadow, the color does not go on as opaque or intense; and also, with the way that a liner brush is designed and its fine tip, it can really reach into the tiny gap in between the lashes, so your liner application can look very flawless. You can make the line really fine, really thick, or layer it up to make it bold & strong!

·

URBAN DECAY - 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil "Perversion"

URBAN DECAY – 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil “Perversion”

·

If you are like me who likes to use a serious deep black pencil that is very creamy, easy to apply & blend, and also waterproof, then I highly recommend Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Pencil “Perversion”. The brand carries a wide range of rainbow colors in its Glide-On Eye pencils. They are cushion-y, creamy eye pencils that deliver powerful, vibrant color that slides on smoothly and stays soft and creamy for blending (about 30 seconds), then dries to a long-lasting finish that won’t budge. These pencils go all day and all night, and it’s waterproof which means it’s great for swimming, or for bridal make-ups.

“Apply eyeliner as close as possible to (and even into) the lashes, to avoid the white line you get when liner and lashes don’t connect.”  – Kevyn Aucoin

·

·

The two eye liner brush that I like to use often to line the eyes are M·A·C #209 Eyeliner Brush and also the M·A·C #266 Small Angle Brush.

M·A·C #209 Eye Liner Brush

·

M·A·C #209 Eyeliner Brush is made of synthetic fiber so it can delivers a precise, soft-firm, even stroke with liquid or gel/cake/cream type of eye liners.

·

M·A·C #266 Small Angle Brush

·

M·A·C #266 Small Angle Brush is a perfect make-up brush that a professional make-up can’t live without! Not only it’s great to create eye liners with its firm fibers, it can also be great for creating various shapes of eye brows, and that crispy clean lip liner as well.

There is a similar version of this brush which is the M·A·C #263 Small Angle Brush. The main difference is that the #263 is made of all synthetic fiber (softer touch and thinner application), and the #266 is made of both synthetic & natural fibers, which gives a firmer application on the lines.

·

Smashbox Arced Eyeliner Brush #21

Smashbox #21 Arced Eyeliner Brush

·

Another great eyeliner brush that’s worth mentioning is the Smashbox #21 Arced Eyeliner Brush. This brush can give you a precised application in comfort. It’s ergonomic bend conforms to the shape of the eyes, provides better control and flawless application in one quick, easy stroke. With its very thin tip, you can use it to apply any liner or eyeshadow along the lash line and inner rim (waterline).

·

M·A·C #219 Pencil Brush

·

Occasionally, when I do a smokey eye liner look with an eye kohl pencil, I also love using M·A·C #219 Pencil Brush. Just as its name, this soft, smooth fiber brush has a pencil-shaped tip. It is ideal for blending eyeliner into eye shadow to create a smoky effect. It’s one of those multi-purpose brush because it’s also great for eye shadow crease defining, concealer or lip color application.

·

M·A·C Fluidline “Blacktrack”

·

M·A·C Fluidline “Blacktrack” is a gel eye liner that I have in my make-up kit I use often. It’s a black color that delivers a smooth application with a long-wearing and smudge-proof finish. It stays on the eyes very well. It’s good for lining the eyes, use as a face painting product, a bold black eye brow looks, great eye shadow base for a super intense black smokey eyes, or if you want to use it creatively, I have also used it for Halloween make-up to create that really black colored lips (just make sure not to eat it)!

·

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner "Black Ink"

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner “Black Ink”

·

Another favorite eyeliner that’s found in many professional make-up artist’s kit is the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner “Black Ink”. This gel formula eye liner gives you the look of liquid liner. It’s long-wearing, water-resistant, the color glides on and lets you get it just right before it dries, then stays without a smear or crease until you take it off.

·

·

Let’s check out some of other great YouTube on eyeliners.

This video is “How To Apply Eyeliner – Pencil, Liquid, Gel Liner” by Makeup By Doda. In this make-up tutorial, she talks about on how to create a basic eye liner with different products: pencil, liquid, and gel; it shows you step-by-step in a close-up look, and you can see the finish on how they appear on the eyes.

The third video is called “Using Business Cards for Makeup” by the famous YouTube make-up artist Michelle Phan. In this video, she shares her awesome tricks on creating brows, eye lines, mascara and face contouring by using business cards. It’s a very creative one!
