Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach

Have you ever wondered how beauty queens do their everyday natural look make-up? What products they are they obsessed with? or even what make-up tips & tricks they do to make that “little, yet effective” difference on their looks?

Besides models, social media bloggers, or make-up artists, we rarely see beauty queen such as 2015 Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (Philippines) who shows her bare skin, and teaches viewers on how a step-by-step everyday make-up look is done, starting from priming the skin (very important)!

Here is a YouTube Video make-up tutorial for you to “watch and learn.” From a professional make-up artist’s perspective, I really like her selection of products (not to mention she uses a lot of M·A·C Cosmetics products that I absolutely can’t live without in my make-up kit), her color choices are neutral and suitable for just about all “light, light-medium, medium, medium-dark, slightly tanned” color skintones… in another word, bravo on her choice of products and colors!

In this blog post, I am going to list the make-up products she uses, how meaningful some of the products are, her advocacy work as Miss Universe 2015, and share her make-up tips & tricks that I believe you will find very useful!

Special thanks to Pia for choosing M·A·C Vival Gam Lipglass “Ariana Grande” product as her lip color, the final touch to her make-up look. Pia’s main advocacy work as Miss Universe 2015’s is to be vocal about her desire to spread HIV/AIDS awareness around the world and end the stigma surrounding the disease/infection, as well as her fight for gender equality and women empowerment.

M·A·C’s Viva Glam Campaign is fully supporting of people living with HIV & AIDS. With M·A·C’s AIDS FUND, 100 percent (yes, you heard it right, it’s 100%, not part of it) of the selling price of every VIVA GLAM product goes directly to men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. How wonderful is that?

Makeup Expert’s Tips & Tricks & Product Suggestions:

m%c2%b7a%c2%b7c-lightful-c-marine-bright-formula-softening-lotion

M·A·C Lightful C Marine Bright Formula Softening Lotion

  1. Moisturize your skin! Pia uses M·A·C Lightful C Marine Bright Formula Softening Lotion to instantly refresh, tones, brighten-up, and smooth the skin conditions with its special marine brightening formula.
Best-primers-10-Vogue-MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance

M·A·C Prep + Prime Natural Radiance

2. Prime your skin! A smooth, clean skin is so essential in creating that flawless make-up look. Pia’s choice of M·A·C Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Primer “Radiant Pink” is excellent before applying foundation to create a  smooth skin canvas that makes make-up last longer and controls the oil on the skin.

3. “Less is More” is the key with good make-up application. Putting more products on the face, it will become heavy and cake-y. We do not want that for our everyday make-up look. Use foundation and concealer only in areas where needed.

m%c2%b7a%c2%b7c-studio-sculpt-spf15-foundation

M·A·C Studio Sculpt SPF15 Foundation

4. Mix colors to get that perfect color match to your skin! For medium, medium-dark skin tones, I often have to mix colors to get the perfect shade. In M·A·C’s system, NC has more golden/olive skin undertone, while the NW has more pinky/rosey undertone. If NC or NW color by itself doesn’t match, you mix both skintone colors to get a perfect skintone match! M·A·C Studio Sculpt SPF15 Foundation is a gel-based foundation that offers medium to full coverage with a natural satin finish, great for everyday make-up!

m%c2%b7a%c2%b7c-haute-and-naughty-lash-mascara-black

M·A·C Haute and Naughty Lash Mascara “Black”

5. You want to create a natural defining lash in the day, and make it more dramatic & voluminous for the evening? This two-in-one M·A·C Haute and Naughty Lash Mascara “Black” does the trick for you! One for day, and the other is for evening!

m%c2%b7a%c2%b7c-mineralize-skinfinish-natural

M·A·C Mineralize Skinfinish Natural “Medium Dark”

6. This baked mineral M·A·C Mineralize Skinfinish Natural powder is multi-tasking! I have different shades of them in my make-up kit. Asides from its main job to set foundations, or to use as a powder foundation itself, the lighter shades are excellent for highlighting; the darker shade is great for contouring or as a blush / bronzing color. It creates a smooth looking skin while making sure its natural looking.

mac-technakohl-liner-graphblack

M·A·C Technakohl Liner “Graphblack”

7. Tight Eye Liner does the magic of creating a natural defining eye line without looking you are a wearing eye liner. M·A·C Technakohl Liner “Graphblack” is a mechanical pencil-style liner with a soft and creamy formula and intense color. Its long wearing and safe for use in the waterline. Tight eye lining does take practice though, and be careful not to poke the liner into your eyes.

mac-wash-and-dry-eye-brows-brow-set

M·A·C Eye Brows and Brow Set

8. Mixing shades of: light, medium and dark colors when sculpting your brows can add a 3-D effect to make it more realistic looking. One color eye brow can sometime look flat. M·A·C Eye Brows pencil is self-propelling and self-sharpening brow definer that adds shape, color and density. The colors that I like to have are: Brunette, Fling, Spiked, and Lingering.

·

If you are into beauty pageant looks, Pia also showed another tutorial on Beauty Pageant Make-up Look that she did on herself for Miss Philippines and Miss Universe beauty pageants! Some key points for pageant make-ups (on stage) are:

  • Use foundation that is good for HD (high definition) and choose a shade that is half to one shade darker than your natural skin tone because stage lights, flashes will tend to wash away colors.
  • Do contour and highlight! This will bring more definition, and make yourself more photogenic on prints & videos!
  • Use neutral colors such as browns for: brows, eyes, contours, and cheek colors. They are timeless and classic.

Wear them on their own for beautifully neutral eyes – you’ve got everything you need to contour, line and highlight to create just the right amount of definition. Urban Decay – Naked & Naked 2 Palettes

·

If you haven’t seen Urban Decay’s best-selling Naked and Naked 2 palettes from before, here are the images for your review. From a make-up artist’s point of view, it makes life a lot easier when the mostly-used eye shadow colors are put together in a palette for you to create the most natural eye make-up looks to smokey eye looks, and everything else in between, so you don’t have to go through and open each eye shadow packaging to mix and blend.

These palettes work  just as well for everyday consumers, they are very universal colors that work for pretty much everyone as they can be used as eye shadows, eye brow colors, or eye liners. I have seen these palettes in a lot of freelance make-up artists’ kits because they are awesome in color selection, great in value, size, and color pigment are good (easy to blend and work with)! I have heard a lot of good reviews about them. It’s so hard just to pick one, I would like to get all of them!

Urban Decay’s Naked palettes are what a professional make-up artist called “the products worth the hype”!

Makeup 101: “Almost Nude” Naked Make-up Look

16 Aug

“Almost Nude” makeup by Tommy | Photo by John Tirso

·

If you are a fashion trend lover, you will notice that in every season of the major Fashion Week runways (New York, Milan, London, and Paris), there are mostly the “not-so-ordinary” type of fashion make-up looks. It can range from your sultry smoky eyes, ultra bold red lips, black printed eye brows…, to the super high fashion type of avant garde make-up, as seen in some of Dior’s Haute Couture runways.

As those make-up looks can really show off the artistry side of the artists, it is worth to know that a very clean, “almost-no-make-up” type of make-up look is also a major make-up trend of many runway shows. My “Almost Nude” is exactly this “almost-no-make-up” type of make-up look.

As an experienced fashion/beauty make-up artist will tell you, this type of look is not exactly the easiest look to achieve, even though it seems simple; sometime a very natural foundation job is a mix of at least 2-3 different foundation colours. To be honest, with this particular look, you almost have to have a right look to make this make-up look stand out (eg. great skin complexion & bone structure).

The key features of this look are: featherweight foundations, highlighters, and super-sheer powders. Some main products & make-up tips of how I created this “Almost Nude” look:

·

Face:

M·A·C Face & Body Foundation

M·A·C Face & Body Foundation

·

After applying moisturizer and face primer, I used M·A·C Face & Body Foundation on the skin. It is great for a very sheer, natural glow-y look on the skin canvas. I used it with M·A·C’s #130 Short Duo Fibre Brush so the skin look very polished! A great thing with this brush is that it has two layers of fibres (natural & synthetic), so you can stipple the foundation on the face in dots, and then buffs and blends in circular motion as you apply the foundation to make it polished looking on the skin.

·

M·A·C’s #130 Short Duo Fibre Brush

·

I also rubbed the same liquid foundation on the model’s body with my hands. Another great feature of this foundation is that it’s sheer, and it appears luminous under the light. This liquid foundation is water-based, and water-resistant so it’s even great for beach photo shoots.

·

M·A·C Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder

M·A·C Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder

·

A touch of M·A·C Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder was brushed onto the skin with a large powder brush, very lightly. Remember, “less is more” with this make-up. The face should be in featherweight foundation, and free of powdery look. And by using this powder, it helps to minimize light imperfections on the skin.

·

Eyes:

M·A·C Eye Brows “Lingering” was used to fill in the eye brows lightly and gently. This eye brow pencil is thin at tip, and self-sharpening as  it’s retractable. You can easily define your eye brows and make it long lasting with this brow pencil.

M•A•C Eye Brows "Lingering"

M•A•C Eye Brows “Lingering”

·

M·A·C PRO Pigment “Naked Dark” is the main colour on the eyes. Pigment is a loose powder colour. I blend the pigment up to the eye crease, and wrapped “Naked Dark” in the under eye area so it gives an appearance as a subtle wash of colour.

M·A·C PRO Pigment “Naked Dark”

M·A·C PRO Pigment “Naked Dark”

·

A really good blending brush that I like to use is M·A·C #217 Blending Brush. It just blends the edge of the eye shadow colour so effortlessly as you work the brush back and forth, back and forth.

M·A·C #217 Blending Brush

M·A·C #217 Blending Brush

·

Cheek:

M·A·C PRO Sculpt & Shape “Bone Beige” is an excellent neutral blush colour, or to use as a contouring colour on the cheekbone.

·

M·A·C PRO Sculpt & Shape “Bone Beige”

M·A·C PRO Sculpt & Shape “Bone Beige”

·

A great make-up tip I learnt for contouring the cheekbones is to use an imaginary line between the corners of the lips to the centre of the ear – this will provide the proper angle for placement if you have difficulty finding the exact placement.

·

You only want to use a little of this, blend the edge very nicely so it’s nicely diffused, and doesn’t end up looking like a hard line underneath the cheekbone.

·

Lips:

To ensure the lip colour stays true to the original colour of the lipstick, I first used M·A·C PRO Lip Erase “Pale” as a concealer to cover up the model’s lips.

·

M·A·C PRO Lip Erase “Pale”

M·A·C PRO Lip Erase “Pale”

·

Then I lined the lip shape lightly with M·A·C Cremestick Liner “Summerfruit”, which is a pale coral colour. What I like about this liner is that it’s creamy, highly pigmented, and it’s a retractable lip liner so it’s twist-and-go!

·

M·A·C Cremestick Liner “Summerfruit”

M·A·C Cremestick Liner “Summerfruit”

·

Last but not the least, I applied M·A·C Lipstick “Peachstock” to create that “almost nude” lip colour. This colour is great because it gives that almost nude colour with a bit of peachy tone, so it gives an alive effect to the lips, but not overly pale.

Asian Beauty Make-up (Miss Asia 亞洲小姐 2010)

5 Aug

Soft & Natural Asian Beauty Make-up

·

Hello Everyone! Welcome to my first Tommy Beauty Pro blog posting! I am a freelance make-up artist/professional, and I have been doing it since 2000. I was born in Taiwan and my post-secondary (college and universiry) education was done in North Americas.

In 2010, I accepted the role as the Key Make-up Artist for the first ever Miss Asia Beauty Pageant in Vancouver, BC. Canada (with Asia TV of Hong Kong as the main organizer). I recruited, traied and led a team of talented make-up artists working with me in this pageant of 2-month ongoing events, where our team provided make-up artistry on the beautiful 12 delegates. They are all lovely Asian girls from Vancouver with different ethnic background: China, Taiwan, and Korea.

Tommy Beauty Pro Team did the make-up for Miss Asia (2010) in varies of events: Meet & Greet, Profile & Poster Photoshoots, Video Shoot, Press Conference, Talent Show, Beauty Make-up 101 Seminar, Fashion Show with Vancouver designer JC Studio, Photography Contest with Mercedes-Benz at Richmond Auto Mall, and the Final Event at RiverRock Casino/Resort Theatre.

After a series of events, and the winner goes to Miss Sasah He, who represented Miss Asia (Vancouver) to compete in the Grand Final Event in Hong Kong (China). Before she took off to Hong Hong, I did a photoshoot with Sasha of this beauty make-up look.

·

Soft & Natural Asian Beauty Make-up

·

The make-up look for Sasha is very soft & pretty. To create a very soft & natural make-up look is not as easy as it seems. It requires minimal make-up, but at the same time, it needs to be blended very well. It must show skin texture/clarity with right foundation shade, and have soft colour intensity (enough to be shown on camera working with the lighting). Overall, this make-up is to achieve a soft, well-balanced look without a strong feature that over emphasize a feature.

·

Soft & Natural Asian Beauty Make-up

·

M·A·C Cosmetics (sponsor of this event) Make-up Products I used for this look:

  • Skincare – Lightful Softening Lotion, Lightful Essence, Lightful Moisture Creme
  • Face – Face Primer, Select Cover-up Concealer, Face & Body Foundation
  • Eyes – Eye Paint Bare Canvas, Pigment in Naked Dark, Eye Shadows in Woodwinked + Naked Lunch + Texture, Fludielin Eyeliner in Dipdown, Lingering Eye Brows,  Clear Brow Set, False Lash #4
  • CheekTwo Virtues Mineralized Blush
  • Lips – Prep + Prime Lips, Lipsticks mix in Brave + Syrup, Lipglass in Love Nectar

I hope you all love my first beauty blog post!
