It’s all about the Hollywood glamour when it comes to social media celebrity Kim Kardashian’s signature make-up look! We all know make-up can really do the trick in creating a 3-dimensional face with highlighting & contouring, defining the face with a pair of bold brows & smoldering eyes with thick layers of spidery lashes (lots of mascara & false lashes), feline black liners and cutting crease style eye shadow application.
Whether you like Kim Kardashian or not (it’s a love or hate, right?), you have to admit that her make-up is always well executed!
Kim Kardashian’s personal makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic knows the best when it comes to a well featured make-up look: make one part of the the face stands out the most, and keeping the rest of the face soft, clean and pretty.

·
What does that mean? For Kardashian’s make-up, the eye area is usually the focus feature of the whole make-up look: strong eye brows & sexy smokey eyes…. the rest of the face? Clean sculpted face with appropriate placement of highlighting & contouring, soft lip colour, and natural looking blush colour for a healthy glow. Once a while, you will see her with her somkey eyes and a bright red lip too for public appearance, she still looks stunning too.

Tommy’s Pro Makeup Artist Tip for Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Looks:
Do the smokey eye FIRST before you work on your face (foundation, concealer, highlight & contour). This way, if there are any dark colour eyeshadow falls onto your cheek, it will be much easier to clean it up.
Use colours that are two shades lighter for highlighting; tow-three shades darker for contouring. Make sure to blend well so the edge looks seamlessly. For more make-up How-To’s in Creating a Perfect Skin & Contouring, please read my previous blog post here.
Contour, Highlight twice, Blush. Take a brush with bronzer fast and furiously go under the chin and down the neck to shade and slim, before focusing on highlighter on the bridge of the nose, light up the Cupid’s bow, chin and just above the cheekbones.
Lots and lots of mascara please, on both top and bottom lashes! Use a deep black color mascara that gives both LENGTH & VOLUME. Add false lashes too for a even more sexy appearance.
L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara
MUA Mario Dedivanovic likes to create the eye-opening effect by wiggling a couple coats of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara from the roots to tips and separating them with a lash comb. Then he painstakingly applies a mix of long and extra-long flared individual lashes—the longest go at the outer corners—using tweezers and black adhesive. Once they’re dry, go over the falsies and real lashes with another coat of mascara.
Curl the lashes (your natural lashes & the false lashes) together after you put on the false lashes. This way, they stick together better and there is no gap in between.
Do use a deep dark black eye liner for this look. Line it all around the eye and wing up at the outer corner of the eye for an instant eye lift look. Eye liner could be in pencil, gel or liquid. Kim likes to use M·A·C Eye Kohl (Smolder)deep into the base of the lashes to create that tight eye liner.
For a strong cutting crease eye application, use a pencil eye liner to draw the line in the crease and the outer eye corner (like in a “<” or “>” shape in the outer corner) and blend it with a smudging brush… this way, the color shows more vibrantly in comparing to using an eye shadow.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz
Do groom your eye brows with a brow gel to keep it stay in place all day long. Kim likes to use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Medium Brown to fill in the outer corners, then switched to Light Brown so it’s softer and sweeter-looking when brows aren’t so heavy at the inner corners.
It’s not hard to see why so many people love Kardashian’s makeup looks because the playfulness of the makeup look is dramatic.

Triple Line Your Eyes!
Eye Liner Secret from MUA Mario Dedivanovic
Triple-Line your Eyes. If you only have one eyeliner in your bag, you’re doing things all wrong. “I usually do three or four layers of eyeliner,” said Dedivanovic. First, he works M·A·C Eye Kohl (Smolder) deep into the base of the lashes, then goes over that with M·A·C Liquid Liner (Boot Black), lifting it up lightly at the outer corners slightly and finishes with Anastasia Waterproof Crème Colorme Color. Why so much effort? “I do it because it gives beautiful definition and looks more expensive.”
·
It’s glamorous & sexy, and the appearance photographs beautifully. You can really have fun in “playing” up the look with it.
Now let’s have a look at some of her signature make-up looks!

Bollywood pretty much has the smoky eye down on lock. So of course, when I sat down with one of their biggest makeup artists – Mickey Contractor, Director of M·A·C Cosmetics Makeup Artistry (India). I made sure I’d ask him about how to get the smoky eye look so many of us are still trying to perfect (that includes me). Instead of telling me, he asked one of his assistants, Donnie Hsiao, to show me! Donnie went right to work, telling me exactly what he was using to achieve the look while he worked:
MAC Smokey Eye Shadow Palette

Products & Tools used:
M·A·C Paint Pot in “Bare Study”
M·A·C “Smolder” Eye Kohl
M·A·C “Carbon” Eyeshadow
M·A·C “Folie” Eyeshadow
M·A·C “Ricepaper” Eyeshadow
M·A·C “Zoom Lash” Mascara
M·A·C #219 Pencil Brush
M·A·C #217 Blending Brush
M·A·C “Lust” Tinted Lipglass
M·A·C “Mocha” Powder Blush
·
Smokey Eye Step by Step:
1. First, apply the paint pot all over the lid as an eye shadow base. This will ensure that there is not creasing and allows you to start on a neutral base.
Prepping the eyes
·
2. Next, apply the Smolder liner to your top lash line with the #219 Pencil Brush. Smudge out.
Apply black liner on the lash line
Smudge the line with #219 Pencil Brush
Extend the smudging around & up to the crease with the #217 Blending Brush
·
3. Then apply a little of the “Folie” eye shadow, topping it with “Carbon” on the eye lid and blend with the fluffy #217 Blending Brush.
Apply a dark color eye shadow like Carbon to eye lid
·
4. Go back to the #219 Pencil Brush and line the bottom inner lid. Smudge out.
Add black liner to the lower lash line
Blend and smudge the lower liner with #219 Pencil Brush
Smokey eye halfway done!
·
5. Using the same #217 Blend Brush, add “Folie” eye shadow to the crease. BLEND.
Add “Folie” to the crease and blend
·
6. To finish, add “Ricepaper” eye shadow to highlight the brow bone. Finish it off with lots of “Zoom Lash” Mascara!
Add “Ricepaper” eye shadow to brow bone as highlighter
·
7. Clean up the surrounding area in case any shadow pigments fell under your eyes by using a powder foundation like M·A·C Studio Fix Powder. To finish up my look, Donnie also used “Lust” Tinted Lipglass on the lips, and dust “Mocha” Powder Blush on the cheeks.
Finished smokey eye look!
Finished look with Make-up Extraordinaire, Donnie!

Below is a snippet of Donnie doing my eyes — it’s not quite a tutorial in itself, but I figure it’s easier to see it done if you want to imitate the look yourself!
How to: Smoky Eyes using M·A·C via Mickey Contractor – IIFA Awards 2011
Traditional red lipstick takes a dark and romantic turn this season. The shades are so deep they border on black. Apply the color directly from the tube for the most dramatic effect. And make sure to dust a skin-warming blush or bronzer on your cheeks to avoid getting into creepy vampire territory.
·
BROWN SMOKY EYES
Smoky eyes are like necklines—they don’t have to be showy to make an impact. Case in point: the makeup at Burberry and Blumarine, where makeup artists traded in their black pencils and sooty shadows for softer shades of brown and taupe. First, trace along the inner lash lines with a rich espresso brown pencil. Then use a medium-size brush to diffuse a brown shadow from the lashes to the crease. Tap the color on your lids first and use what’s left over on your fingertip to blend.
·
GREEN SHADOW
Yes, it’s green. But it’s a rich, sexy, jewel-tone kind of green. Not crunchy or earthy. We first fell in love with the shade at Jason Wu, where models hit the runway with emerald shadow spread over their lids and winged past the outer corners. For a more subtle effect, you can dust lids with gunmetal or charcoal, then press green on top. Either way, finish with tons of black mascara.
·
GRAPHIC BLACK CAT-EYES
Warning: This is not liner for the timid. Dramatic swoops and exaggerated shapes painted on with liquids, gels, and pure black pigments characterized the coolest cat-eyes this season. For a night out, we suggest trying the Brigitte Bardot–meets–Cleopatra eyes at Lanvin (you can’t get much sexier than those two). First, draw the outline of the shape you want with black pencil and fill it in with black shadow. For a less intense version, a thick stroke of black liquid liner will do.
·
GOLD ACCENTS
Show off your angelic side with delicate touches of gold on the eyes and cheeks. Trace a gold liner around the eyes like at Marchesa, or dust a soft white-gold shadow all over your lids like at both Diorand Dolce & Gabbana. Gold also gives skin a candlelit effect when dabbed on the cheekbones. For fair skin, try a beige-gold, while medium and dark tones should go for something a bit more bronze.
·
COBALT-ACCENTED EYES
The cerulean shade dazzled on models at both Stella McCartney and Anna Sui. A small dose is all you need, though: Coat top and bottom lashes with one of fall’s new shocking blue mascaras, or try it in the form of liner. Liquid formulas lend themselves best to a thin, crisp line.
·
BRIGHT MATTE LIPS
Superbright lips can often be supercheesy. But not the high-voltage pinks and red we saw on the runways of Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, and Thakoon. Without the slightest bit of shimmer or gloss, they were chic, stylish and all grown up. To achieve maximum coverage—and staying power—swipe on a clear balm, then layer and blot a few coats of lipstick. Keep skin fresh and dewy.
·
PICTURE-PERFECT SKIN
No one has a flawless complexion, but with the right amount of coverage and strategic highlighting, you can fake one. The important thing is for skin to not look like an oil slick, so pick a luminizer without too much shimmer or pigment is beautiful and subtle on light skin. Dab it around the outer corners of the eyes and down along the cheekbones. Don’t forget to add a bit in the Cupid’s bow.
·
APRÈS-SKI CHEEKS
Whether your cheeks are flushed from a day at the slopes or a night at the lodge, it doesn’t really matter: The illusion of healthy, rosy cheeks is just plain sexy. Stick to cream blushes—they’re easier to build up and diffuse, and they tend to have a translucent quality that allows you to see the natural texture of your skin underneath.
·
GROOMED BROWS
Brows look best when they perfectly frame your eyes, and when they’re not pencil-thin (which always looks unnatural). Our best advice for nailing the perfect shape: Put down the tweezers and buy yourself a good brow pencil (try one that’s one shade lighter than your natural color), and if your brows grow quickly, use a tube of clear brow gel to keep them tame between appointments. Experts swear by a clear mascara!
